How to organize your own LahnCleanUp

10 steps to a CleanUp

 

On this page you will find all the information you need to organize a CleanUp.

 

1. note the date in your calendar: Saturday, 9. September 2023, from 10am to 1pm and register a cleanup in your area on the website. The earlier you sign up, the better we can still supply you with materials such as grabbers, rubbish bags and gloves.

 

2. seek support from the mayor and the city council. Inform them about the date and ask for support - for example in choosing collection points or organizing the removal of the collected rubbish! It is often advisable to approach the local waste disposal company directly. Mayors have so far been happy to make the issue a matter for the boss - and are helpful in organizing, but also in procuring local sponsors.

 

3. Start with public relations! Inform the local media, point out the date, ask for an announcement and a call for participation! In some regions, newspapers have even become actively involved as co-organizers. Create an event on social media (e.g. Facebook). Name the time, duration and meeting place. Share the event on your timeline and on pages you manage or follow!

 

4. Send invitations to schools, nurseries, clubs (rowing, kayaking, surfing, diving but also other sports), walking groups, universities, student groups, scouts, clubs and associations (Rotary, Lions, civic and allotment societies) and keep in touch to talk about how they can participate!  This also applies to local businesses to possibly approach them at the same time for possible funding (in goods or financial donations). 

 

5. Estimate the number of participants and inform the RCU organizing team. Depending on the number of participants, the RCU team will have a number of gloves, beach flags and rubbish grabbers as well as rubbish bags in stock. These can be obtained - while stocks last - from the RCU team.

There will be national and local sponsors. We are now so well known that e.g. savings banks, credit unions and other local businesses are happy to participate and provide the equipment. We can provide templates for posters on which the local sponsor can present himself. Contact the RCU team!

 

6. invite participants on social media to like the page! Post the event at regular intervals on e.g. Facebook/event (weekly) so that the action stays in the minds of the participants!

 

7. inform the local media again in the week before CleanUp Day! Announce again the local collection points and ask again for an appeal!

 

8. meet at the collection points two hours before the event, prepare tent, beach flags, table, equipment, gloves, list of participants etc.! Prepare a briefing for the volunteers: What to look out for when collecting. You can get information from the central RCU organisation. They will also provide you with a template for an appropriate handout. Take a group photo (with equipment) before you start. Ask the participants for permission to publish these photos! This can also be done with a small poster at the material distribution point.

 

9. Take photos of the CleanUp that capture the atmosphere (Facebook post or other social media)!

 

10. thank all participants! Report to the central RCU team if special items (gold watches, mopeds, etc.) were found! Estimate the amount of rubbish collected (amount of bags) and report it to the RCU team! Both are needed for the information of the national press. Send a short summary (if possible with photos) by e-mail to the local media!
